Scarlet Runner Bean species description: Scarlet Runner Bean is self-fertile, produces August to October and blooms from July through September with red flowers. It is susceptible to Slugs adore the young shoots in the spring. It is a branching vine, is drought tolerant, is a nitrogen fixer and is fast growing. USDA Hardiness Zones: 7–11. Often grown as an ornamental for it’s season long beautiful display of scarlet flowers. The beans and pods can be eaten cooked along with the young leaves. The flowers are also edible. It’s hardy to zone 7 but may die back to the roots after a hard frost. A great addition to a three sisters guild.
