Description
Known as “King of Pears” in Japan, where it’s prized for its size and flavor. Also called Singo, this Asian Pear ripens mid-late Oct. The fruit is large to very large, sweet & juicy with crisp, somewhat coarse flesh and an orange-brown russet speckled with prominent lenticels. Tree is a pollen sterile, requires heavy thinning and is susceptible to fireblight. It is resistant to black spot & scab, is precocious and is exceptionally productive. It is a cross between Amanogawa and Imamura-Aki. Excellent keeper (8 months). It originated in Japan, 1927.
Asian Pear species description: Asian Pear is drought tolerant. USDA Hardiness Zones: 5-9. Asian Pears do great in the Pacific Northwest. Grafted onto appropriate vigorous rootstocks, an Asian pear can be prolific producers in our soil and climate. Cultivars are classified in two groups. Most of the cultivars belong to the Akanashi (‘Russet pears’) group, and have yellowish-brown rinds. The Aonashi (‘Green pears’) have yellow-green rinds.
